Beyond the immediate concerns, come many additional tasks made more challenging by the grief and loss you’re experiencing. We offer this detailed list to helpfully assist you.
Initially
- Notify family
- Notify family doctor
- Contact funeral home
Within the first week
- Obtain death certificate (and additional copies, if necessary) from funeral home
- Contact lawyer, trust officer or other legal advisor
- Apply for a will search with Vital Statistics if necessary
Within the first few days
- Locate will
- Attend to funeral arrangements
- Arrange for clergy or celebrant
- Notify friends and co-workers
Within the first month
- Probate will
- Locate investment and bank details
- Check safety deposit box
- Apply for death/survivor benefits, if relevant
- Cancel BC medical card
- Cancel driver’s license
