It is with great sadness we announce Don has passed away after a gradual but lengthy struggle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Ann, of 44 years, children Christine Franklin, Stephen Barnes, and Colleen Barnes Robinson, step daughter Joanne Brown, sister Muriel Whittaker, step brother Rob Barnes, sister-in-law Rosemarie Barnes, and his extended family comprised of 11 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. At the young age of 16 he joined the Canadian Navy where he spent the next 7 years. After the Navy, his eventual career choice was the insurance industry, spending many years at ICBC, CNS and finally as an insurance broker in Squamish at his own agency.
Don and Ann moved to Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island in 2007 where they were able to fully enjoy their retirement. Don had a huge passion for skiing, striving for and attaining his Ski Instructor and Ski Coach certificate, sailing on his sailboat and crewing for others in the yacht club, mountain biking as well weekly trail maintenance, kayaking and any other exciting adventure that life could bring.
A Celebration of Life to honour Don will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 in the Serenity Room at Yates Memorial Services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.
