Ernest Okell passed away peacefully on October 24, 2016 after a lengthy illness.

Ernie was born on April 24, 1941 in Lanark, Ontario, but grew up in Walkerton. He graduated from Waterloo Lutheran University (aka Wilfrid Laurier) with a B. A. in History. Ernie worked in the Human Resources Department of London Life for several years before deciding to pursue a career in education. He earned a B. Ed. in Guidance as well as a Master’s Degree in Education. Ernie became Principal of schools in Red Lake District and Moosonee, and finished his career as a Supervisory Education Officer in north-central Ontario. In 2005, Ernie and Kathy moved to Nanaimo, BC, to enjoy their retirement.

Ernie was a dedicated 10 km runner until he had to slow down and walk the distance. He was an avid reader, golfer, and football fan. Ernie enjoyed exploring North America by motorcycle and RV, as well as touring the world. He was a founding member of FEMORK, one of the oldest investment groups in Canada. This business/social group formed the basis for friendships from university that have endured for over 50 years. In Nanaimo, Ernie was actively involved in the Nanaimo North Probus Club and served as its President.

Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Grace Okell, and his brother and sister-in-law, Ed (Faye) Okell.  Ernie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathy Okell, his three children, Rebecca Okell (Igor), Greg Okell (Celine), and Carole Ann (Clarence) Woudsma, the mother of his children, Karen Follis, five grandchildren (Courtney and Marcas Okell, Lucas, Avary and Celia Woudsma), his brother, Eric Okell (Doris) and numerous extended family members. 

A private Celebration of Life for Ernie will be held on April 23, 2017 at 1:00 in the AV Macan Hall of the Nanaimo Golf Club.
