Gerald Ross SHARMAN

April 23, 1926 ~ August 2, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Gerald Ross Sharman, a longtime resident of Qualicum Beach, B.C. died after a short battle with cancer on 2 August 2017.

Gerald was raised in Fleet, Alberta. Gerald was predeceased by his beloved wife Verona on January 20, of this year. He was also predeceased by his parents, Earl and Myrtle Sharman and by his brothers Orval and Howard. 

He is survived by his sister Marlene Sharman, partner Ruth Burgess and his daughter Bonnie (Ken) Boyd, Grandchildren; Eireann (Mike) Zenko, Alison (Warren) Johnstone, and Kathryn (Lucas) Lee.  He is also survived by his nephew Barry (Margaret) Sharman, great nephews Jeff (Melissa) and Steven (Tania) Sharman, nephew Brent Sharman and by his sister in-law Marilyn Sharman, (Macdonald), nephew Gary Sharman and niece Arlene (Doug) Morrison, great nephews John and Ian Morrison. Sister and brother in-law Bill and Marietta Glasier, brother and sister in-law Hilliard and Helen Merchant and many Merchant family nieces and nephews.

Verona and Gerald moved to Qualicum Beach in 1951 where they raised their daughter, Bonnie (Boyd). Gerald and his brothers were involved in many business ventures in Qualicum Beach.  Hauling and selling ice, sawdust and coal. He and his brother Orval owned and operated Sharman Brothers trucking and eventually owned and operated the hardware store and Gerald owned and operated the Qualicum Beach Village Garage for 25 years. He and Verona loved their life in the Village of Qualicum Beach and were firm defenders of supporting local businesses.

Gerald joined the Canadian army in December of 1944 and was discharged in September 1946.  He was a 60 year member of the Qualicum Beach, Branch 76 of the Royal Canadian Legion; He was a founding member of the Qualicum Beach Curling club and an active member in the Rotary club of Qualicum Beach prior to his retirement and volunteered for many years at the Qualicum Beach Museum.  Gerald and Verona were avid travelers and loving grandparents who devotedly travelled to Alabama, Spain, and Australia to visit Bonnie, her husband Kenneth Boyd, and their 3 grandchildren Eireann, Alison, and Kathryn. In the last few years Gerald finally became a Great Grandpa to Jackson, Alexis, Julia, and Cadence. Gerald played his last game of golf with Ken on May 17, 2017, he was awesome.

Gerald will be missed by his close friends Gordon and Ann Parker, who each year spent their wedding anniversaries together. They and Patsy and David Parker and Orlan and Lois Rye also spent many vacation trips and adventures with Gerald and Verona as they explored all the Canadian provinces, the Yukon and also camping on Vancouver Island. There were many trips back to Fleet and Coronation in Alberta visiting with their   relatives.  Gerald treasured his friendship with his golfing buddies and especially his friend Claud Buchanan.

The family would like to thank Dr. Marlene Van Der Weyde and the palliative care nurses and aides of the Nanaimo Regional Hospital and Trillium Lodge in Parksville.

Service will be held on Saturday, August 26, at 2pm at St Stephens Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach.
