Welcome to the memorial page for

Alex KOBELAK

December 7, 1931 ~ September 7, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Sadly we announce the death of Alex Kobelak, a dear husband , father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Alex passed away in Nanaimo Hospital on September 7th after a brief illness.

Alex leaves to mourn his wife of 62 years, Lorna, and their three daughters: Sandy (Mark Rundle), Lori (Richard Hamilton) and Jill (Paul Negenman). He also leaves to mourn his two sisters-in-law, his nine beloved grandchildren, his one great grand-child, and his many nieces and nephews of whom he was exceedingly proud.

Alex was predeceased by his father and mother, Steve and Eva Kobelak, and his three brothers, Metro, John and George.

Alex graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1953, receiving a degree in Civil Engineering. He was very proud of that profession and spent many years of his life serving on the Board of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, receiving its two highest merit awards and a lifetime membership. During the latter half of his career Alex was engaged in overseas development where he undertook the refurbishment of railway bridges in Bangladesh and the construction of a coastal road in Indonesia.

He was a man of tremendous energy, believing that every minute should be put to good use. Over the years he engaged in many leisure activities and aimed at doing all of them well. As a young adult, he played tennis and golf, and later sailed and curled – all with equal fervour.

When Alex retired in 1996, he and Lorna moved to Parksville on Vancouver Island. Alex quickly found a new activity when he created an investment discussion group, called Mid Island Money Savers. This group of men became fast friends as they studied the Stock market.

Alex also took an interest in Parksville administrations, serving on the City Planning Council, the S.O.S. Income Tax help team and the Community Health Center.

As his health began to fail Alex sought the counsel of Dr Stephen Noble, to whom the family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for his generous guidance.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Yates Memorial Services on September 18th,  2017 at 1:00 p.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed either to the Salvation Army (please mark “re: Parksville BC branch” in memo line) or Knox United Church (please mark “re: Discretionary Fund, Parksville BC parish” in memo line)
