MERLE LELIEVRE PARSONS
October 15, 1928 – October 28, 2019
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Merle Lelievre Parsons at the age of 91 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all. Merle is survived by her husband Jack Parsons; daughter Denise (Dean); grandchildren Melanie (Jimmy), Haley and Ryan; and great-grandchildren Dean and Demetri of San Jose, California. Merle’s beloved son Ron predeceased her in 2008. Merle also leaves numerous friends and extended family with whom she was very close.
Merle (nee Kalancha) was born on a farm in Willingdon, Alberta to parents of Ukrainian heritage. She was the youngest of five children: Steve, Joe, Rose and Anne. As a young woman, she moved to Edmonton, Alberta where she began a career as a florist. Merle’s keen business sense and artistic flair earned her many awards. Her vibrant personality and creativity in floral design made her a regular guest of CFRN TV host, Laura Lindsay. In 1966 she first opened Flowers by Merle, a business that she and eventually her son, Ron, operated for almost 50 years. While her business brought her much success, her real passion was for her family whom she loved dearly.
During Merle’s retirement years she moved from Edmonton to Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island where she met Jack, her husband of 22 years. Together they enjoyed walks along the boardwalk in Parksville and for a time, golf in Palm Desert. When it was no longer possible for her to golf locally due to her eyesight, she became passionate about the game of bridge which she played several times a week.
Merle always opened her heart and home to bring people together. She was happiest in her kitchen preparing many wonderful feasts for family and friends. Her fair mindedness, warm spirit, generosity, and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.
By request, there will be no formal celebration of life. Donations on her behalf can be made to the CNIB.
