Bernie ZIEHR Obituary

Bernhard (Bernie) Andreas Ziehr was born in Bamberg, Germany to Johannes and Hannelore Ziehr on September 16, 1949. At the age of 2, Bernie immigrated to Canada with his parents and his older brother, Norbert.   They made their way to the prairies of Alberta where Bernie’s parents founded a dairy farm just outside of Strathmore. Eventually they welcomed a third son and brother Clark into the family. The farm was where Bernie’s hard work ethic was fostered.

From there he moved to Calgary, where he met his first wife Margot and gave his mother her first 2 grandchildren; Jeanette and Matthew. In Calgary, he joined the Canada Post and began his long career as a letter carrier. After a few years in the single life he met his neighbor and fellow letter carrier, Karen Grubisich. They married in 1977 and moved to Victoria, where their daughters, Tarryn and Courtney were born. Eventually Port Alberni became his home.

Bernie was a hard and dedicated worker, never missing a day of work in 29 years . When Karen fell ill with Multiple Sclerosis, he took on a second job working evenings at the Paradise Café. In his spare time, he would work on home renovations, woodworking projects and playing softball, volleyball and later on golf his buddies John, Doug and Lisa.

Bernie loved the classics. His soul belonged in the 40s and 50s. He loved old cars, old movies, and classical music. In later years, his favorite place to be was his home away from home, Pastimes Bar and Grill. Here he enjoyed doing crosswords, the daily wordle, and visiting with staff and regulars.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen; his children, Jeanette (Sandy), Matthew (Marnie), Tarryn (Jeff), and Courtney (Paul), grandchildren Theresa, Sonje, Ryley , Seamus, Emma, and recent great-grandson Jackson. His older brother Norbert (Margaret) still reside on the family farm. He was predeceased by his parents, Johannes and Hannelore and his brother, Clark.

Bernie was a quiet and shy man but with a little bit of time and often some liquid courage his bright and fun personality shined through. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and past coworkers.

His Celebration of Life will be held at the Best Western Barkley Hotel Ballroom   on February 18th at 1:30pm.
