Bruce Mein Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce Bruces passing.

Bruce passed away with his family by his side in Nanaimo, BC. From complications of Pulmonary Hypertension.

He was husband to Patty Maguire, father to Connor.    Brother in law to Jamieson Maguire, Rex Maguire (Horseshoe Valley, Ontario) Bill Maguire (Penny)  Tiny, Ontario.  He is predeceased byhis brother inlaw Ron Maguire and his parents Joe and Lillian Mein.

Bruce was a loving husband and a dedicated father to Connor.  He was passionate about hockey and golf and will remain forever a Habs fan.  Born in Montreal, he migrated to Toronto then on to  Alberta where he worked as Western Regional Manager for Sports Display Canada.  He won several annual awards for Canada.

For several years Bruce volunteered in Airdrie Little League baseball as umpire as well as in
Airdrie  minor hockey, never missing any of Connors games.

We would like to thank Dr Jason Weatherald and nursing staff at Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary, for his care and kindness, as well as the ICU staff at Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

Donations to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada are welcome.

When he was asked to scout for York Lyons, the York University hockey team, Bruce spent hours researching teams and players to recruit in Western Canada.  He selected several key players from the west that drove the team to the playoffs.

Bruce lived his life on his own terms, we enjoyed travel to Spain and Italy, visiting vineyards in the south of France.  He researched and studied as much as he could about the history, food and wine in Europe.  He was exceptional at planning those trips spending hours researching the most interesting areas to visit.

Bruce enjoyed talking about the technical aspects of golf, he was my golf pro and partner,  I will forever remember his words of encouragement and his favourite saying.  “Put both cheeks into it”.

When Bruce was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension we decided we would continue to travel by exploring areas we could drive to.  Oregon offered beautiful scenery and the Willimette Valley was abundant with wineries to explore.   Palm Springs was his favourite winter destination for the variety of affordable golf courses.

His most recent goal was to play the top 100 public courses across Canada, a trip we were planning this summer which would have included visiting family and friends along the way.

He was a loving, caring husband and father and will be forever missed.

Dad will be remembered by life time of amazing memories with his family. He made sure I was in enrolled in all sports growing up always wanting to be involved in some way, while also ensuring I became a young Montreal Canadiens fan just like him. Early on he was the ultimate hockey dad, driving all over western Canada for tournaments and away games. His Music choices soon became a fan favourite volunteering to play the music between whistles at home games. He was always wanting to volunteer in some way or another, not only in minor hockey but in little league baseball where he was an umpire for many years. Years later he was still a dedicated hockey dad driving hours to Saskatchewan to watch me play hockey, he truly loved the game and his son.

Once he retired from a career as a regional manager with an advertising company he continued his love for hockey as a scout with York university for 8 years. He loved meeting new people at all the different arenas across the junior and university hockey ranks, he was very proud of helping York win an Ontario championship. Aside from hockey he loved golf. He grew up golfing at Royal Montreal golf club where he learned from his dad Joe, he always spoke of fond memories at Royal Montreal. Anyone that knew my dad knew that he loved being on the course and was always looking for the best course in the area, he had played some amazing courses all over North America and Europe. Some of his favourite memories were on the golf course with his son and family.

I will forever think of the memories of us spending time together no matter if it was golfing, breaking down a sporting event or talking politics. He taught me so much over the years I am so thankful he was my dad. I have so many great memories that are coming back to me because of him and it makes me smile every time.

I love you dad
