David Benedict Obituary

David George Benedict
January 2, 1939 - November 12, 2021

It is with deep sadness that the family of David George Benedict announces his passing on Friday, November 12, 2021 at the age of 82 in Nanaimo, B.C.

Dave was born in Blind River, Ontario January 1939.   As a young man he was employed by Ontario Hydro in Atikokan and moved to Peterborough in 1958 where he met and married Beverley Hetherington in 1959. He was transferred to Kitchener/Waterloo then to Hamilton and had 2 daughters, Dawn and Darla. His job took him to Rolphton NPD where he switched to Nuclear and settled in Deep River, Ontario where he lived for 20 years. He married Pat Dixon in 1983 and they moved to Kincardine, Ontario where Dave’s long career came to an end with an early retirement.  In 2008, they moved to Parksville on Vancouver Island, B.C.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Dawn Christopoulos (Nick) & Darla Bureau (Claude) and grandsons George (Nikki), David, Alex, Brendan (Danielle), & Corey (Madison) and his great-grandson Jackson Robert Bureau along with his step-children Deborah, Ruth (Eric), Fiona (Jack), David (Claudia), and Maureen and his step-grandchildren Sarah (Matt), Jess, Dav (Melanie), Aysha, Max, Hannah and Zack and step-great-grandson Kegan. Survived by siblings Gary Benedict, Cathy Lamb (Robert), Lorne Jameus (Dorothy), Margaret Jameus and Kim Jameus Diotte and many nieces and nephews. He is fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Betty LeFave (Paul) and their children Laurie, Kevin and Debbie.

Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife of 31 years, Patricia, and step-daughter Sheila; parents Lorna Kathleen Jameus and George Benedict, step-father Daniel Jameus, sister Judy Stieh, brother Michael Jameus,  brother-in-laws, David Stieh, and John Gary Gold, sister-in-law Beverly Benedict and nephew Joseph Lamb.  Also by his father-in-law, Earl Hetherington, mother-in-law Cora Hetherington, dear friend Orville Williamson, and brother-in-law Bill Hetherington.

Dave was a voracious reader and loved listening to his favourite music often with his faithful feline companion Squeak. He was an avid sports fan and golfed most of his life.  He and Pat enjoyed many years at the camp “Laputa” where they spent many hours around the campfire with special friends, especially Bruce MacLennan, family and the guitars.  Pat and her family widened Dad’s world, literally giving him opportunities to visit many far off places and connecting him to her large, close family.

Special thanks to Fiona who so graciously cared for our dad in his last years and moments.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life for Dave in Ontario at a later date—details to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
