Gwendolyn “Gwen” E McClellan

It is with unbelievable sadness we announce the sudden passing of Gwen McClellan (Allison) on Aug 21st, 2022 at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital at 74 years young. She was raised in Edmundston NB and after completing her nursing schooling she moved to BC to begin her 34 year nursing career.  Despite all efforts to remain single, she met her future husband (a dashing young banker named Richard “Dick” McClellan)at her very first stop in Vanderhoof.  They were married in 1970 and while having wonderful adventures through the northern parts of BC, including Terrace, Prince Rupert, and Cassiar they had 3 amazing children David, Tracey and Ian (Megan).  Finally landing in Westbank, BC she continued her volunteer activities including the United Church, Stroke Club and anything her kids got involved in.  At the same time she managed to hold down careers as a nurse and prenatal instructor all while working side by side with her family as the owners of the local convenience store (HyMart).  She never wavered in her devotion to nursing and taking care of others – whether at the Summerland or Richmond Hospitals or just in how she stayed in touch and ensured everyone was OK.  She retired in 2012 while living on Salt Spring and spent many a lovely winter in Arizona visiting her new friends and local haunts such as the Organ Stop Pizza and Arizona Opry.  In 2017 she packed up yet another residence and moved to French Creek on Vancouver Island.  She quickly made it a home and was able to spend more time doing the things she loved like watching golf and curling, and volunteer at community organizations.  In 2020, she and Dick celebrated their 50th anniversary and began planning their celebratory Alaska cruise which they embarked upon July 2022.  Sadly, it was on the return to Canada she fell suddenly ill and ultimately passed away.  She was an inspiration to her family and her never wavering support, love and tireless energy through good and bad times will be greatly missed.  She truly was the glue that held us all together.  A service will be held on Tuesday October 4th, 2022 at 1:30pm at Yates Memorial Services at 1000 Allbrook Rd in Parksville.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gwen’s name to the charity of your choice.
