Helene Minishka Obituary

With great sadness we announce that Helene Minishka of Parksville passed away at home on Sept 16. She lived a very full life.

Born in Toronto and raised in Surrey, Helene looked after her sister when they were young. In 1963 she worked as a secretary in Vancouver until marrying Orest in 1965.  Helene soon became a busy stay-at-home mom, garage sale/flea market vendor (with Orest), and community volunteer. She spent tireless hours in service of the New Democratic Party; chaired two Parent Association Committees (Sexsmith Elementary, Churchill Secondary); represented PAC at Vancouver School District; served on the Sunset Community Centre Board of Directors; and participated in the Property Assessment Review Panel.  Helene also established a MAC computer club which she continued in Parksville when they moved in 1999.

Helene fostered an abiding love for others throughout her life. She hosted many homestay students from Japan and China; and she treasured friends and neighbours wherever she lived. Always willing to share her love of homemaking and gardening, she was known for her wonderful parties, delicious food and nostalgic Christmas decorations. Helene’s sense of humour and mischievousness was contagious. A devoted fan of the BC Lions Football Club, she will be dearly missed.

Helene is survived by her loving husband Orest Minishka, sister Marion Brady, brother-in-law Terry Chitrenia, niece Christal Bryans (Dave) with children Matthew and Charlotte, and dear son-in-law Caner Budakoglu. Predeceased by parents Walter Christensen and Mrs. June Wilson, brother Knute Christensen, and daughter Bridget - her pride and joy. A private Celebration of Life will be held in Parksville October 9, 2021 followed by interment at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.  Condolences to Helene’s family may be sent to Yates Memorial Services.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a charity of your choice.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
