It is with great sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of Katherine Arlene van den Broek. Mother, grandmother, sister and friend. After ten long months of hospitalization, Kathy has succumbed to her injuries after a tragic fall in her home on September 24th 2020. At the young age of 59, Kathy was taken from us far too soon.
She is survived by her partner Steve Hogan, her children, Lisa, Lanae, Brad and Cody and her grandchildren, Brianna, Dakota, Nathan and Hayley, Asher and Olivia, Ayla, Daelynn, Jett and expecting baby. she was predeceased by her parents, Dick and Jane van den Broek and her sister Sylvia Blakey.
Kathy was born in Port Alberni where she raised four children, worked full time and managed to put herself through college so she could better support her family. Kathy only aspired to be mother when she grew, but she was so much more, she was a caregiver by nature and profession, working in many homes in the community including Johns Best Interest Society. Kathy was described as selfless, compassionate and loving, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was very proud of her children and was quick to brag about her grandchildren who would light up her face upon sight. Kathy acquired many valuable friendships over the years, some would fall in and out of touch but were never strayed far from her thoughts, she cherished them all.
Kathy grew up in a home with seven sibling and knew the value of family solidarity. The love and loyalty between these sibling is unmatched, and the strength they draw from each other is courageous. Kathy was very fortunate to have you all in her life. A special thanks to Brenda, who was therein her final moments to comfort her, you truly are a true Angel.
Thank you to the wonderful ICU staff at Victoria General Hospital and to the incredible team at Royal Jubilee, both the Palliative and nursing staff on 8 North.
