Patricia Carley Obituary

Patricia was born on March 6, 1938 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario to Paul Edgar and Grace Morrison (Darling) Young. Patricia and her two siblings led an adventurous childhood as their family followed their father around the mining conglomerate locations of Rio Algom. She spent her childhood in Mimico, Pronto, Blind River and Port Credit, Ontario.

She graduated high school from Branksome Hall and then went on to Teachers College and received her certification. While Patricia was living in Shelburne, working full time and raising three daughters she received her Honour’s English degree at University of Toronto. She had a teaching career in Ontario that lasted 25 years and she continued to upgrade her certifications and education including her Masters throughout the many years. She taught such diverse subjects as English, Math and Art and spent time as the school librarian.

Patricia was married to Alexander Jessop Carley from 1959 - 1968 and together they had four daughters Diane Helen Carley, Joan (1962-1963) Suzanne Meredith (Ewen) and Joanne Darling (Haydon).

Forever a nomad she also lived in Elliot Lake, Sudbury, Edmonton, Regina, Toronto, Shelburne, Fergus, Elora, & Guelph. In 1998 Patricia retired to British Columbia leaving the harsh Ontario winters behind. She settled in Sooke and later moved on to Victoria.

Patricia lived a very fulfilled retired life being a doting grandmother to her five granddaughters as well as focusing on her many talents and hobbies. Her brain and fingers were always in motion as she filled her days with her lifelong love of learning, reading, sewing, knitting, quilting and playing the piano. Forever the competitor, she loved euchre, rummicube, mexicain trains and qwirkle and was always keen to play.

She was also fortunate to have travelled with all of her daughters and always embraced an adventure.

Her last residence was Berwick Retirement Home in Qualicum Beach, BC where she embraced the many clubs and activities and also met wonderful friends who shared in her many interests.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents Paul and Grace Young. She is survived by her siblings Helen Termaine and Michael Young, her daughters Diane Carley (Sarah Martin), Suzanne Ewen (Erik), Joanne Haydon (Geoff); and her five granddaughters Carley, Luci, Lily, Georgia and Charlotte.

We sincerely thank all the staff and residents at Berwick for making her last years a very special, engaging and fulfilling home for her and to all at Trillium Hospice for the care and attention they provided our Mom in her final days.  We are forever grateful to them and all the people who made our Mom’s life full of laughter, love and companionship.

At the request of Patricia there will be no service.  Her final resting place will be at the Qualicum Beach Cemetery in the Serenity Woods. A plaque commemorating her will be placed in the Memorial Book.
