Toby Lawrence died on July 20, 2023, after a sudden, brief, and unforgiving illness. His wife and daughter were deeply honoured to have been with him during his final moments.
Toby was born in Pine Lake, AB, where he, quite simply, got up to no good with lifelong friends and many of his 13 cousins – descendants of the the six infamous Lawrence brothers. The lake represented freedom, learning, and childhood awe to Toby. Toby was predeceased by both of his parents. He lost his father Pat, “The Governor”, a larger-than-life character, early in life. His relationship with his mom, Roma, “Biddy”, was heart-warming and enduring.
Professionally, he found his way to Ottawa where he met his wife Monique of 43 years. Toby and Monique spent the majority of their married life in Calgary where Toby took various career adventures, found joy hosting friends and family, and earned praise for his spectacular back garden. Following their life in Calgary, Toby and Monique moved to Parksville, BC to be closer to family. Their love and the longevity of their commitment was admirable until the end.
Toby’s life was marked by wonderful friendships, lively conversation, volunteering, art, cooking, golf, and supporting his family. His well-earned retirement years were spent continuing to learn about the world, having his morning coffee while watching the news on his beloved CBC, socializing over a drink, sharing experiences with family, working in his new gorgeous garden, talking with his Poopsy, and more golf. He was so pleased to have had the chance to live out a lifelong dream and play a round of golf on his 80th birthday.
Toby did not suffer fools lightly and challenged himself and those around him. He was single minded and incredibly stubborn. He was charismatic and charming and would engage with anyone he could – willing or unwilling. He was loving, kind (but, certainly not “nice), contemplative, and supportive. He was a steadfast anchor for our family.
He will be lovingly remembered by those he leaves behind.
Gatherings will be held in Pine Lake and Parkville at a later date. For details, please email mrrmlhall@gmail.com
