William Smith (89) of Parksville B.C. passed away in hospice care on September 13, 2023, after a battle with cancer.
Bill was born in Glasgow Scotland, to John and Margaret Smith in 1934, one of four brothers including his twin, Alexander.
He is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth (Betty), children Derek(Jean), Dawn(David), and Drew(Carla), as well as 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin brother Alec and sister-in-law Betty, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by brothers John and Arthur, brothers in law Jack White, James White, and John Hunter, sisters in law Mary Hunter and Isa Smith, and niece Virginia Hunter.
Dad served his National Service with the RAF, and upon leaving trained as a joiner working in that trade for many years before taking on the position of Building Inspector in Qualicum Beach.
In 1965 Bill and Betty took the bold step of leaving Scotland to immigrate to Canada, settling in Calgary and beginning a new life there, spending 10 years on the prairies before pulling up stakes once again, migrating to the island and Qualicum Beach.
Dad played piano in his younger years, but his passion was ballroom dancing, at which he excelled. He also enjoyed carpet and lawn bowling, was active in the Qualicum Beach Seniors Centre and St. Columba Presbyterian Church, enjoyed singing and entertaining, as well as a good dram.
Dad will always be remembered for the smile on his face, the glint in his eye and a quick wee joke.
Throughout his entire journey he never lost his sense of humour and was a gentleman until the end.
Special thanks to the nurses and volunteers at Trillium Lodge Hospice for their kindness and caring in dad’s final days.
Sleep in Peace Dad…” Oor Wullie”
