Winnifred Stigter Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Winifred Kathleen Stigter who passed away peacefully at her home at age 92. “Wyn” as she was known to friends and family, is predeceased by her beloved husband Jacobus “Ko” Stigter and son, Gary.

Wyn is survived by her daughter, Linda (Glenn), son, Chris (Amy), daughter-in-law, Linda; six grandchildren, Ashley, Kathleen (David), James, Riley, Jack and Dayton and great grandson Lucas.

Wyn grew up with her sisters in India during the second world war.  From a British background, she became a registered nurse and  studied midwifery after.  She had worked as a midwife when she met Ko while travelling through Europe.  They  married shortly after and chose to immigrate to Canada in 1952.

Wyn and Ko arrived in Canada with $27 dollars in their pockets and settled in Port Alberni, where their family quickly increased with the birth of Linda, Gary and Chris.

Wyn loved Tennis, Hiking, curling, bridge, board games, and of course, family.  She took solace in small things, such as knitting and painting, spending many days on the beach (out of the sun!) capturing the people and landscapes of Mexico, where they spent winters as snowbirds for over 25 years.  An avid  traveller, Wyn, together with Ko, visited over 50 countries, including both the south and north poles. During those travels, she embraced the quiet life, enjoying long walks along the beach, piecing puzzles, playing rummy cup and Yahtzee, or just nestling in with a good book.

Wyn will be deeply missed by friends in Parksville and North Vancouver; family in Vancouver, Washington State, California and London; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Europe and Florida all who will fondly remember her whimsical style and childhood stories of growing up during the war with her two sisters Pat and Dorothy.

Our family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care provided by Germaine Franck.

A Celebration of Wyns Life will be held at 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville in the Allsbrook Room at Yates Memorial Services.
