Caroline May (Myhres) Smith

We lost our beautiful mom after a courageous 11 month battle with cancer. Predeceased by her 
husband of 57 years Stanley and her parents, Sigrid & Morgan Myhres. She leaves behind to mourn her 
loss, son Calvin (Ella-May), daughter Lisa (Doug) Lanty, four grand-children, Tyler & Megan (Morgan) 
Smith, Colton and Brooke Lanty. 

Beloved sister to Maize (Albert), Lillian (Ted), Shelley (Shah), brothers Leon (Pearl), Tito (Linda) 
and Aunt extraordinaire to numerous nieces and nephews. 

Caroline was born in 1942 on March 10 in Cold Lake, Alberta. She spent her childhood in the small 
farming community of Riverhurst, Alberta. At the age of 15 she moved to Terrace, BC with her parents. 
After a couple of years, off she ventured to Ottawa to live with her big sister Maize and Albert. Here she 
met her soul-mate and love of her life Stanley. He proposed but she kept him hanging on waiting for an 
answer, finally saying yes. They were married October 14, 1961. 

With the birth of their son Calvin on September 6, 1962 family life had begun…there were tough times in 
Ottawa, but they rewarded themselves with a trip to Vancouver Island in 1969. They loved it so much, 
they packed up everything and moved to Cumberland in 1970. Rounding out their family with the birth 
of their daughter Lisa on May 7, 1972. In 1978 a new job brought them closer to family with a move to 
Bowser. Mom spent many hours driving us around to different sporting, 4-H, school and community 
events. Road trips to visit distant relatives and friends were always an adventure with her behind the 
wheel. No trip was complete without pitstops at various casinos and their favourite getaway was to Hot 
August Nights in Reno. 

Life on the farm was grand! Lots of family get togethers, dances at the Legion and good times were 
had….the 90’s saw them move to Parksville and she found her passion in Sales and Marketing at the 
Island Hall planning weddings. With the closing of the resort she ventured into selling cruises, this 
enabled her to really have fun travelling the globe. Mom was happiest when travelling. 

Mom’s true calling began in 1989 when she became a Nana, she loved all her grandchildren and 
spending time with them. Excursions to Terrace in the summer, sitting at the ball field cheering them on 
with her unique chant, handmade gifts created with love at Christmas….all treasured moments that will 
be carried in her grandchildren’s hearts forever. 

Retirement found her re-igniting her passion for creating beautiful works of art. Dabbling in oils, 
watercolors and chalk pastels, she spent happy hours honing her craft. A proud moment for her was 
recognition of her talent being featured at the MAC in Parksville, where several of her works were on 
display. 

We are grateful for the support and love that Maize and Al gave to mom in this past year. And to all the 
family and friends who were there for her and us through to the end. 

We take comfort in knowing you and dad are together watching over us all.
