Edith McBride Obituary

Our Mum, Nana, and “GG” left us early Saturday morning, May 7th, 2022. Surrounded by family in her final days and hours, her passing to the next place was peaceful.
The words graceful, selfless, compassionate and caring still do not fully describe Joan. Loved by all that knew her, as they received her unconditional love in return.

Joan had a wonderful and adventurous childhood, growing up at Great Central Lake, where lifelong values and friendships were formed. She lived happily in West Vancouver for over thirty years where she brought up her family, moving back to the island after her husband Roy’s retirement. She was a passionate teacher, talented cook, brilliant gardener, caring neighbour and loyal friend. Joan loved entertaining, fashion, interior design and knew every social etiquette rule by heart. She was a loving wife and avid travelling companion for Roy, but most of all a good person. Joan believed in giving back and did so in many meaningful ways including her donations to charity and her volunteer work.

Predeceased by her husband Roy in 2013, and her sister Nora in 2018, Joan continued supporting herself in her home until the age of 95. A fall at home forced her to move to long-term care. There she was cared for and loved by all the staff at her final home (Astoria) in Nanaimo. Her unbelievable medical challenges in her last years were met with amazing grace, grit and determination.

She leaves behind her two brothers Wes (Debbie) of Ottawa, and Tony (Reia) of Ireland; children Brenda (Garry), and David (Debbie); as well as grandchildren Lindsay (Steve), Kyle, Keeley (Kirk), and Russell (Tatianna); great grandchildren Maya, Sylvie, Brynn and Ezra, and a large and loving extended family (too many to mention).

Joan was the best of mothers and grandmothers and great grandmothers. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and told them so often. She supported her family even when she was the one needing support. Her determined spirit and unconditional selflessness is something we can all strive to emulate. "We will try Mum!”
