Joan Reid Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Reid our dear Mum, Aunt, Grandmother and Great Grandmother of Qualicum Beach.  “Joansie” as she was so often called, passed away as she lived her life- with grace, love and family at her side.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Hugh, her brother Don, and her parents Boyd and Emily Mills.  Joan is survived by her four children: Glen, Lynda, Sue (Bert), Craig (Barb), her six grandchildren: Michael (Michelle), Kristen (Paul), Tyra (Todd), Bryce (Sabrina), Marcia (Peter), Jordan (Devon) and 12 precious great-grandchildren: Jessica, Daniel, Shyloh, Michaela, Marissa, Matthew, Taryn, Spencer, Devan, Ryder, Hunter, and Millie.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law Olive Aylesworth, niece Donna, nephew David and best friend Elsie Newlove.

Joan was born and raised in Qualicum Beach and was one of the original alumni of The Old School House so many decades ago.  In her younger years, she and Hugh were very active in the community of Qualicum Beach often volunteering, attending Community Hall dances, Qualicum Golf Club events, and summers at the beach.  She led a simple life raising her four children and being a WW2 veteran's wife.  She could bake a mean apple pie, outsmart anyone in crossword puzzles and took great pride in reciting the alphabet backwards, even in her 100th year.  Her greatest qualities were her humble spirit, gentle heart and love for her treasured family.

The family would like to thank her granddaughter Marcia Kent of Qualicum Beach, who provided special care to Joan in her final days at home.  We would also like to thank Dr Brad Bell, the ER and 6th Floor teams at NRGH, the Community Healthcare Workers, paramedics and Oceanside Hospice Society for their wonderful care.

As per Joan’s request, a private family graveside memorial will be taking place at Cedar Valley Memorial Garden.

“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,

Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I’d like tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;

Of happy memories that I leave, when my life is done.”
