Margaret Jean HURLBUT

Margaret Jean Hurlbut passed away at her home on Vancouver Island, while looking at the ocean, on Thursday, November 1. She battled hard and remained positive throughout the 10 month struggle with cancer. Margaret passed, peacefully aware that Jim, Kelsi, and Austin were by her side.

Margaret was a proud native Calgarian who attended Sir Winston Churchill High School and received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary.  

Margaret started her career with the Calgary Board of Education in 1982, at Cappy Smart Elementary School, followed by Victoria School.  

She married Jim Hurlbut in 1984 and in 1990, Jim’s job took them overseas to Borneo, Indonesia; they spent the next 25 years living and exploring the world, with Kelsi and Austin. 

Margaret’s life was influenced by many diverse cultures, having lived her life not only in Calgary, but also overseas in Borneo and Jakarta Indonesia, Singapore, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Margaret was a dedicated teacher. Her classroom was a special place where all those who entered felt safe, and excited to see what the day would bring.

Margaret shared her love of learning with her students and encouraged them with love and kindness. 

After teaching for 16 years in Dubai, Margaret retired from the classroom in 2012. Margaret then traveled to Uganda, Africa to volunteer at a small, rural school in Masooli; where she worked tirelessly to bring the community together through her love of learning. This project captured her heart, and she passed knowing that those close to her would continue the work.

She had a huge impact on everyone she encountered; and always saw the good in people. Margaret will be remembered for her infectious, positive, and enthusiastic attitude; her deep connections; and her smile. She would encourage us all to keep up our curiosity and to always remember to play. 

She is survived by her husband Jim of thirty-four years, daughter Kelsi of Calgary and son Austin of Victoria B.C; sister Ann Berezowski (Daryl Shaw) of Houston, TX, brother Marc Berezowski (Barb Komar) of Deep Cove, B.C.; two nephews, Jonathon Berezowski (Andrea) of Calgary, Tristan Berezowski of Deep Cove, B.C. and one niece, Sophia Brerezowski of Deep Cove, B.C.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents Bill and Jean Berezowski.

A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at Cochrane RancheHouse (101 Ranchehouse Rd, Cochrane, Alberta, Canada), on Saturday, December 8 at 11:30.  Please come dressed colourfully and casually.
